In 1960 or early 1961, I was standing [in] a crowded corridor outside my advisor’s door, opposite the office of a young Professor Lowi whom I knew only casually. Along came Ted and, with no words of explanation, [he] pointed his finger at me and made loud sounds of a machine gun. I slumped to the floor, and Ted walked into his office and closed the door. Only “Professor Lowi” and I knew that Roger Tuohy -- a notorious Chicago gangster -- had been shot to death on the previous day.
